Senior Mine Engineer

Our client is currently recruiting for a Senior Mine Engineer to support an expansion project within their Operations located in Saskatchewan.

Scope:
Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, the Senior Mine Engineer is responsible for the coordination and performance of the short and long term mine planning processes within the Mine Engineering department. This includes the coordination of all aspects related to the development and stewardship of 1 week to 12 month short-term mine plans, planning for short-term sequencing issues, development of the 20 year and life of mine plans, and mentorship of junior Mine Engineering staff.

Specific Responsibilities:
Coordinating short-term mine planning (design & scheduling):
Ensure short-term (1 week to 12 month) mine plans are produced and stewarded to through a reconciliation process;
Ensure that short-term planning encompasses the requirements of the long-term plan;

Coordinate the creation of the short-term sequence of events, including updating & inclusion of all relevant Operations & Maintenance tasks to the sequence to complement the production requirements;

Report weekly & monthly tonnage & grade achievements;

Reconcile actual production results to budgeted results for formal reconciliation requirements on a monthly, quarterly & annual basis;

Host the weekly Mine Sequencing meeting & provide post-meeting updates & plan to stakeholders (foremen, mill, etc.);

Optimize the weekly Mine Sequencing meeting to take advantage of any opportunities that arise;

Highlight maintenance time opportunities & provide Operations with planning support to allow the opportunities to be utilized efficiently;

Coordinate & manage change in the short-term planning area to continuously improve department performance;

Audit documentation of geological issues (high back cutting, bolts, disturbances, leach zones, etc.) in the drawing files to ensure that file accuracy is maintained & information is available for future use in the mine planning process;

Coordinate creation of room projection documents for Mine Operations pre-cutting;

Coordinate with the Mine Operations Superintendent & Mill Operations personnel on short-term mill requirements;

Ensure all short-term mine plans are communicated to & coordinated with the Mine Manager, Chief Mine Engineer, Mine Operations Superintendent, Mine Maintenance Superintendent & their associated staff;

Highlight & coordinate drawings required for Mine Operations support; Coordinate the inclusion of routine samples into block model updates on a biannual (every 6 months) basis;

Coordinate the creation of room summary reports documenting grade, geological factors, ventilation concerns, bolts required, etc. for future use in the mine planning process in adjacent rooms.

Familiarity with underground ore zone and processes.

Coordinate long-term mine planning activities:

Steward to the long-term plan;

Coordinate the creation of the 20 Year Strategic Plan;

Manage the MOC process for mine planning and ventilation changes and optimization;

Coordinate personnel involvement during the process of plan creation and updating;

Host planning sessions to work through issues requiring group resolution;

Communicate all mine plans to the Chief Mine Engineer, Mine Manager, Mine Superintendents and Mill Manager;

Coordinate quarterly and annual reconciliation activities.

Promote improvements in all areas to meet or exceed set targets:

Ensure alignment and cohesion within the Mine Engineering team;

Participate in the budgeting process and steward to the Mine Engineering budget (capital & operational);

Recognize and implement continuous improvement opportunities;

Coordinate short-term planning improvements;

Coordinate implementation of short-term scheduling software changes (from AutoCAD/Earthworks to Vulcan/iGantt);

Supervision of assorted Mine Engineering personnel:
Manage employee performance with discussions & full documentation

Perform the Chief Mine Engineer job duties as needed.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

A Bachelor degree in Mine Engineering or related degree;

Have 8-10 years of mining engineering supervisory experience, preferably underground;

Able to handle a large and varied workload;

Excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, problem solving, and organization skills;

Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision;

Experience working with MS Office, SAP, CAD, and Mine Planning software such as Vulcan / iGantt.

Hours of Work:

Our client values work-life balance and offers a 9-80 schedule where employees work a two week cycle of 9 hour days with the first Friday in the rotation being an 8 hour day and the second Friday being a day off.

Reporting directly to the Construction Director, and dotted line to the Area Project Manager, Mine and Hoist, the Construction Manager, Underground leads the field planning, coordination and field execution of Project VAULT Underground Mine expansion.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Constructability input and leadership through design for the scope of work Underground
  • Accountable for the direct oversight of the field activities within the scope of work Underground
  • Responsible for interfacing with personnel responsible for the self execution of Vault related scope items for underground
  • Responsible for ensuring that field cost, field schedule updates, and field scope items are accurately transmitted to the EPC Contractor and that progress, productivity, and earned value are properly reported for all self directed scope items
  • Responsible for updating the EPC Contractor schedules for RAS dates for procured undergoing equipment and materials
  • Assist in the planning and scheduling of the execution phase of the project underground
  • Work with the area QA Coordinator to provide quality management oversight during execution ensuring technical requirements such as: specifications, drawings and procedures are adhered to
  • Ensure Contractor adherence to project and general site procedures In conjunction with Construction Director, EH&S Manager and Area LPC, conducts random safety audits and inspections
  • Ensure that all required permits are adhered to and as-builts are diligently completed
  • Provide bi-weekly project updates to the Construction Director and Area Project Manager, Mine and Hoist
  • Review manpower requirements in conjunction with physical progress and provides recommendations for staffing level changes if required to the Area Project Manager, Construction Director, and VPO Mine Manager
  • Complete detailed look ahead reviews with  underground foremen responsible for executing VAULT scope items, and ensures compliance with project milestones, level 3 execution schedules, and the project execution planIdentify functional issues and priorities and recommends appropriate actionsGuide and manage work of direct reportsManages interactions with underground ongoing Operations and Maintenance
  • Provide input to the Area Project Manager for trend notices and deviation alerts as requiredLiaison between operations, maintenance, technical groups and outside contractors

    Provide assistance, where required, with pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including pre-safety startup procedures, testing procedures, pre-commissioning and commissioning schedule

    Ensure turn over of systems and related documentation as per the project Mechanical Completion Procedure

    Responsible for review and sign off of internal  labour and expenses for underground field related activities

    Responsible for providing input to the Area Project Manager and Engineering Manager in formulating responses to Non Conformance Report and Technical Deviation Requests

    Responsible for assisting the Area Project Engineer in responding to Contractor and Vendor Request for Information

    Qualifications:

    • Journeyman trades certificate or technician diploma with construction management background
    • Experience in underground mine construction required, specifically in the areas of ore conveyance and hoist loading pockets
    • Understanding of project planning and scheduling techniques and software
    • Minimum of 15 years of construction supervisory experience
    • 5-10 years of brownfield/retrofit Construction Management experience preferred
    • Knowledge of  OH&S and environmental regulations
    • Understanding of Saskatchewan Mines regulations and underground supervisor’s certification or common core training preferred
    • Project management Certification an advantage (PMP)
    • Formal safety training an asset
    • Personal Qualities/Competencies
    • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to work and produce results under pressure
    • Understanding of computer programs and applications (SAP, word processing and spreadsheets)
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
